Grand Palace The Grand Palace is Bangkok's most iconic landmark, built in 1782 as the official residence of the Kings of Siam. This sprawling complex of over 100 golden-spired buildings, ornate halls, and courtyards showcases the pinnacle of Thai craftsmanship. Highlights include the Chakri Mahaprasat Hall, a striking fusion of Italian Renaissance architecture and traditional Thai roofs, which today serves as a venue for royal ceremonies and state banquets.
Wat Phra Chetuphon Located within the Grand Palace grounds, Wat Phra Kaew is Thailand's holiest temple, housing the revered Emerald Buddha — a 66-centimeter-tall statue carved from a single block of jade. The statue's seasonal costumes are changed three times a year in a royal ritual believed to bring prosperity to the nation. The temple itself is a dazzling masterpiece of Thai art, adorned with colorful glass mosaics, golden stupas, and intricate murals depicting the Ramakien epic.
Chinatown, Bangkok Just a short walk south of the Grand Palace, Wat Pho is home to the magnificent 46-meter-long Reclining Buddha, covered in gold leaf and depicting the Buddha's entry into Nirvana. The massive feet are inlaid with mother-of-pearl illustrations of 108 auspicious symbols. Beyond the reclining statue, Wat Pho is also famed as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage, offering visitors the chance to experience an authentic treatment at its on-site massage school. |
